Brighton College

Foreign Languages

The College boasts a genuinely broad range of language learning options in the Sixth Form.

  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Latin
  • Mandarin
  • Spanish

Pupils who select to study a language in Years 12 and 13 are rewarded with small class sizes which maximize speaking time as well as expert and experienced teachers. The expectation is that language pupils choose this option because they are academically ambitious, understand the career opportunities that can be enhanced in almost every profession by having two or more languages at their disposal. They are typically curious about the world around them and enjoy giving their own opinions on these topics.

Further Study: An A-level in any Foreign Language is an excellent qualification with which to gain access to any university degree course, particularly as an A-level in a Foreign Language is considered to be one of the higher academic qualifications. It is an obvious route for anyone wishing to study an Arts or Humanities Degree but aside from this, it perfectly complements any Business or Marketing degrees in today’s global society. Not only does an A-level give pupils a gift for life but as it teaches high level communication skills, needed for career destinations such as doctors, psychologists and physiotherapists therefore a worthwhile qualification for any pupils looking to study Medicine.

Exam Board: Both AQA and Edexcel are used for the Foreign languages at A-level.

Course Requirements:  Grade A minimum is required in the relevant GCSE language subject. Special circumstances are not unusual with some pupils having a particular connection, parent, or other reason for studying the language; so all pupils are treated on a case by case basis.
