The music department in the Senior School aims to:

  • Provide a varied and inspiring academic curriculum, which enable all pupils to develop their musical skills and understanding to their full potential and foster a life-long passion for music.
  • Offer teaching that stimulates, challenges and inspires pupils to want to study music to the best of their ability.
  • Enable pupils to develop their own creativity and see the potential in music for overcoming cultural and social differences.
  • Maximize pupils’ achievement in GCSE 
  • Provide the resources necessary to enable pupils to progress from Brighton College to the best Conservatoires and Universities. 

Year 9 

All Year 9 pupils have one 40-minute class music lesson each week. Pupils work through the Brighton College Year 9 workbook, which involves listening and composition practical work, written tasks and performing in class. This work will be assessed during the year culminating in an end of year examination. 


The College follows the Edexcel specification for GCSE Music. The GCSE in music comprises three units.

Unit 1: Performing music (30% of the total GCSE)

Unit 2: Composing music (30% of the total GCSE)

Unit 3: Music Listening and Appraising. (40% of the total GCSE)
