Physical Education

Pre-Prep School Physical Education is about developing a child’s physical self-awareness and enabling the child to feel happy, secure and confident in their own space and the environment around them. We aim to explore, encourage and extend each child’s natural physical abilities and health-related knowledge, in order to meet the challenges which lie ahead in both the Prep and Senior Schools as well as in their life beyond. We aim to achieve a balance between aesthetic and practical, individual, partner and team work. PE in the Foundation Stage is taught with very young children in mind through stories, games and songs, allowing choice in activities within set boundaries.

  • As children move into Year 1 and 2 the PE curriculum becomes more formal with specific learning across the various disciplines.
  • In gymnastics the children learn to extend their range of movement and use their bodies imaginatively and safely in space and on small and large apparatus.
  • Dance encourages movement, imagination and interpretation and is enjoyed throughout the College.
  • The children are gradually introduced to all the major sports through being taught ball handling, aiming and passing skills, moving and dodging, until eventually they can move on from small game situations to the game proper.
  • There is one swimming lesson a week in our outdoor pool from FS2, firstly by introducing water skills and confidence and eventually progressing to swimming strokes. FS1 children are introduced to the pool with taster sessions in Term 3.
